The English in Holland and Flanders

The State Papers Foreign of queen Elizabeth consist mainly of letters and reports concerning England's relations with continental Europe. The inhabitants of the Low Countries were at this period attempting to throw off the Spanish yoke, and Elizabeth sent considerable forces to their aid. The papers relating to Holland and Flanders in the State Papers Foreign are so voluminous in consequence, that a separate calendar was edited by Sophie Crawford Lomas and Allen B. Harley family papers
(1690-1708)
This collection of letters and papers is particularly interesting in that it includes a file of petitions and memorials to queen Anne from 1704 to 1708, and a similar file of petitions to Robert Harley in his post as Secretary of State during the same years. Correspondence of Matthew Prior
(1685-1721)
Matthew Prior was secretary to the British embassy and minister ad interim at The Hague 1693 to 1697, secretary to the embassy at the Congress of Ryswick in 1697, and secretary to the embassy and minister ad interim at Paris 1698 to 1699. His papers survived among the archives of the Marquis of Bath at Longleat, and were edited for the Historical Manuscripts Commission by J. J. Cartwright, A. Maxwell-Lyte and J. M. Rigg, and published in 1909. The volume concludes with a journal and memoirs relating to the Treaty of Ryswick. Russell family correspondence
(1670-1754)
Mrs S. C. Lomas of the Historical Manuscripts Commission prepared this report on the manuscripts of Mrs Frankland-Russell-Astley of Chequers Court in Buckinghamshire, published in 1900. There are a few items included earlier than 1670, and a few later than 1754, but broadly the collection was divided into three groups: 1. Russell and Frankland correspondence 1657 to 1697; 2. Cutts and Revett papers 1687 to 1708; 3. Colonel Charles Russell's letters 1742 to 1754. Sir John Russell was married to Frances, daughter of Oliver Cromwell; their daughter Elizabeth married sir Thomas Frankland. Their son John Russell, governor of Fort William in Bengal, married as his second wife Joanna (niece of Lord Cutts) widow of colonel Edmund Revett; and John's son, colonel Charles Russell married Colonel Revett's daughter, Mary Joanna. The largest part of this collection is the correspondence of Colonel Russell, of the 1st Regiment of Foot, and later of the Coldstream Guards, soldiering in the Netherlands.DE VILLARS.
